1.     How does night vision work?

Night Vision works from using the existing ambient light (Starlight, Moonlight as well as infra-red light). That light in photon form comes through the objective lens, and then it transfers into electrons by traveling via the photo-cathode element. This light is amplified multiply times in the Image Intensifier Tube (IIT). What happens next is the light is thrown against a phosphor screen and it appears in the eyepiece as an amplified and clear picture.

 2.     How does thermal imaging work?

Thermal imaging is a digital technology that works off of heat recognition. The thermal core will recognize anything that emits heat. Frame rate, is one of the most important specifications of any thermal imaging device.  Frame rate refers to a number of frames per second, which can be viewed via the device.  The lower the frame rate, the slower the motion.  On the other hand, the higher frame rate, the faster and more precise motion you experience.  Clear frame rate is critical in weapon scope applications that require precise and quick acquisition.  At this point, there are 4 main frame rates categorized by motion precision:

            1. 7.5Hz - The very first and slowest refresh rate technology we offer (used with FLIR monocular(s) which are mostly utilized for observation purposes.)

            2. 9Hz - Standard Imaging (SI) also, per specific products, this is a commercial exportable version.

            3. 30Hz - Fast Imaging (FI) Standard professional thermal system.

           4. 60Hz - Enhanced Imaging (EI) The fastest frame rate available in modern technology, works just as fast as your HD television.

 3.     How do I know which device is perfect for me?

The way to find out a perfect device for yourself is based on three principles:

  1. What are you going to be using it for?
  2. How far you want to see?
  3. Price range/budget?

There are several different cases when night vision is mostly used.

  1. Hunting
  2. Observation
  3. Home Security

The further you want to see the higher the generation will be. (I.E. refer to the Gen. distance chart below question #4)

The price range also dictates how far and how clear the picture will appear.

 4.      What is the difference between generations?

Night Vision (NV) technology has four generations overall. Every next generation has it`s different features and characteristics. The higher generation`s number the better and more advanced it is.  Let`s take a brief look at every generation to make it more convenient for you to navigate yourself through our site and understand better what you are looking for.

Generation 1 - The very first and most primitive generation available. The Technology used is pretty simple; it uses a vacuum tube unlike the rest of the generations, which use different types of gases in the tubes. But still it’s the most widely used generation in the world.  These units provide a bright visible image at a low cost, which makes them a popular choice for boating, observation, or home security.

Generation 2 - This generation is mostly used with professional applications including but not limited to Law Enforcement. Important to remember the jump from Gen 1 to Gen 2 is the biggest, thus why it will cost more.  This Generation uses Multi- Alkali gas in the IIT, which makes the image a lot clearer, and you can see much further than compared to Gen 1.  Second Gen is also equipped with a Micro-Channel-Plate (MCP), which allows the devices to amplify the ambient light many more time than first Gen. (With well moonlight and starlight see up to 200 yards.)

Generation 3 - This Gen includes a special gas called Gallium Arsenide within the Photo-Cathode, which allows the third Gen devices to perform brighter and sharper than second Gen units. An ion barrier film increases tube life, providing consumers with much more reliable and longer lasting products. (In a clear night up to 300 yards.)

Generation 4 – The top line, cutting edge, Military spec technology.  Enabled with filmless micro-channel plate provides a significant image quality and highest resolution available today as well as eliminating the “halo effect” in it’s entirety. This is possible because the IIT includes “Filmless Technology” and it eliminates the halos completely. The image quality under low-light conditions is dramatically improved, compared to previous Gens.

Generally speaking under partially good lighting at night, the generations will see (but not limited to) yardage listed below.

  Distance (Yards)

Gen. 1

100 yds.

Gen. 2

200 yds.

Gen. 3

300 yds.

Gen. 4

400 yds.

LP/MM stands for Lines per Millimeter it is basically the resolution of the device. The more Lines per Millimeter the better the picture quality is going to be.

Gen. 1

Gen .2

Gen. 3

Gen. 4

If you have any further questions regarding distances/ Resolution please do not hesitate and contact our experts at 1-888-336-9555, we will be happy to help.

 5.     What is the difference between night vision and thermal imaging?

Night Vision is mostly used for observation in contrast to thermal, which is used for detection. For instance if you are looking at a dog 200 yard out with night vision you will be able to understand that this is an actual dog, with thermal imaging you might be able to mistake it for another type of animal. On the other hand if you are hunting a hog at night and it happens to run behind a bush with thermal imaging you will be able to detect it, because it`s a live animal emitting heat, which would be impossible with Night Vision.

 6.     What is a Fusion System?

As explained earlier there are benefits for both Night Vision and Thermal. Now imagine having both in one, it`s called the Fusion System and you have the best of both worlds.  It can be used during the day because it is digital technology, as well as it has digital zoom unlike pure NV.

 7.     What is Digital Night Vision?

In contrast to pure night vision, digital night vision works off of digital technology.  Can be used during the day because it doesn’t contain an IIT.  Because these units do not use IIT’s, they are a lot more affordable and more user friendly in regards to being able to use them in the middle of the day. Since these units are digital they centrality offer “digital zoom” unlike pure night vision. The quality of these images can even at times be much better than some Gen 2’s as well as much better the Gen 1’s! Some unit’s even offer a choice for users between regular green mode and revolutionary B&W mode.

 8.     Does Night Vision work in foggy conditions?

No it does not.

 9.     Can I use Night Vision Scopes in daytime?

No you can`t because daylight sun will burn the Image Intensifier Tube (IIT). On the other hand you can with a digital night vision scope because as mentioned earlier digital can be used.

10.  Can I use daytime scope with Night Vision?

Yes, you can. We have day/night systems that you simply slide in front of your daytime scope and it turns into night vision.

11.  What is WPT?

WPT is an exclusive technology. White Phosphor Technology provides users with natural black and white night vision image instead of old school green one.  Recent studies show that B&W picture is more natural and less stressful for human`s eyes than regular green phosphor image.

12.  Why do these products cost so much?

Due to the fact that these are the latest technologies these items can be on a pricy side. Good thing to know that Tech Eyes has night vision for every budget, because not all night vision is so expensive.

13.  What types of rail systems do your night vision/thermal weapon sights fit?

Night Vision/Thermal sights have an adjustable mount that fits both Picatinny and Weaver rail systems.

14.  How can a night vision device be focused?

This can be simply accomplished by adjusting the diopter ring left and right until you find the perfect medium.

15.  How do zero in my Night Vision weapon sight?

Since it will be near impossible to zero in your night vision weapon sight during the night, in the daytime with your back facing towards the sun and intervals no more than 10 minutes adjust the Windage and Elevation according to your weapon specifics without taking the lens cap off. (Remember 1 click equals 100 yards.) This is possible because there is a tiny pinhole allowing minimum light into the unit so you can mange your adjustments.

16.  Why should a regular person have a night vision gadget?

Tech Eyes have spent a lot of time surveying its Customers needs and we came to a conclusion that our merchandise is used in a very wide range of purposes including: fishing, boating, observation, hunting, home security, hog control (and other un-wishful animals), hiking, recreation, paintball and many more kinds of sports and nighttime activities.
